Artesanías de Colombia trae a uno de los diseñadores industriales más prestigiosos y reconocidos del mundo, Stephen Burks, quien llegará la próxima semana a nuestro país.
El diseñador neoyorquino será el encargado de llevar a cabo una serie de talleres en la ciudad de Pasto y Bogotá, que buscarán orientar a artesanos y estudiantes sobre conceptos en innovación de diseño y posicionamiento de productos diferenciadores, caracterizados bajo el concepto de neo artesanía, del cual Burks es un pionero.
En una primera etapa, el diseñador se reunirá con 25 artesanos nariñenses, de las localidades de Sandoná, Pasto y Cumbal, que trabajan diversas técnicas propias de esta región como el barniz de Pasto, tejido en palma de iraca, tejido en guanga, trabajos en torno, talla en madera y Ebanistería, cuyo objetivo es lograr el desarrollo de nuevos productos en cada una de las técnicas.
Adicionalmente, Burks realizará algunos talleres y conferencias el miércoles 21 de noviembre en el Salón de Conferencias SD-1003 de la Universidad de Los Andes, en la cual los asistentes podrán ser partícipes de sus experiencias y trabajo con comunidades artesanales de África y Sur América en donde ha contribuido al desarrollo de nuevos productos, transformando las materias primas en objetos inteligentes y funcionales.
Artesanías de Colombia contactó al diseñador en los Estados Unidos y tras algunos meses de negociación y acuerdos, se ha logrado que participe en esta importante iniciativa, que apoya y contribuye en la misión de Artesanías de Colombia de promover y apoyar el sector artesanal.
“En coherencia a la misión de Artesanías de Colombia buscamos siempre incentivar a los artesanos del país en innovación de propuestas y asesorías en diseño, con el fin de apoyar y promover su trabajo”, Afirma Aida Furmanski, Gerente General de Artesanías de Colombia.
Burks es reconocido en Estados Unidos como uno de los mejores diseñadores de su generación. Actualmente vive y trabaja en Nueva York, en cuyo taller se han gestado proyectos de diseño creativo para reconocidas marcas internacionales como Artecnica, Audi, B & B Italia, Boffi, Calvin Klein, Cappellini, Coty Prestige, Estee Lauder y Missoni.
Sobre su trayectoria
Burks estudió arquitectura en el Instituto de Tecnología de Illinois y Diseño de Producto en la misma entidad. Posteriormente asistió a la escuela de Postgrado en la Universidad de Columbia.
Desde 2004, Burks se comprometió con el desarrollo del concepto de diseño sostenible y al mismo tiempo asesorando a diversas organizaciones sin ánimo de lucro y artesanales, como lucro Aid to Artisans y The Nature Conservancy, lo que le ha valido el sobrenombre de activista el diseño.
En el 2005 Stephen empezó su relación más directa y profunda como consultor en colaboración con artesanos de todo el mundo en Australia, la India, México, Perú, Sudáfrica y Senegal, con el objetivo de impulsar el desarrollo e intercambio artesanal entre las naciones.
En 2006 viajó al Perú donde comenzó a trabajar en su propio proyecto documental de televisión titulado Hecho en la Tierra, y actualmente en compañía de Sundance Channel se prepara la producción para el primer piloto de este programa en el canal estadounidense.
Un largo camino recorriendo varias comunidades artesanales alrededor del mundo, lo ha llevado a documentar varios procesos y a aparecer en numerosas publicaciones de diseño y revistas. Sus proyectos han sido expuestos en todo el mundo en diseño de ferias, galerías y museos y ha sido merecedor de varios premios al diseño en Estados Unidos.
